SMS Celebrates Read Across America!

The annual Read Across America Celebration is coming to SMS the week of Monday, February 20th! This national event, sponsored by the Stratham Teacher's Association and National Teacher's Association, promotes reading in honor of author Dr. Seuss. (Most schools will be celebrating the following week as his birthday is March 2nd, but because we will be on vacation we will celebrate the week before!)

We will be celebrating all week long in a number of ways! We will hold two all-school events, one on Tuesday to launch RAA Week and a Drop Everything and Read event on Friday. In addition, all students (and teachers!) are encouraged to dress up for the following theme days:

  • Monday- Fox in Socks Day: wear crazy socks
  • Tuesday- Cat in The Hat Day: wear your favorite hat
  • Wednesday- Wacky Wednesday: wear your craziest mismatched outfit
  • Thursday- Theodore Geisel Day: dress as your favorite book character
  • Friday- Curl Up and Read Day: Wear PJs to school and bring your favorite pillow/stuffed animal for our school-wide Drop Everything and Read event (please remember to also bring a flashlight for our spooky read with our 5th grade buddies!)

Another part of our celebration will be a book swap! Students are encouraged to bring in gently used books that they've already read or no longer read to swap for a "new" book! The swap will happen in our classroom on Friday, February 24th. Any books that are not chosen in the swap will be donated to a local charity.

If you know of a community member who would be interested in being a guest reader for classrooms during our Drop Everything and Read event on Friday the 24th, please let us know.

Thank you, as always, for your support, and happy reading!
