Read Across America Week--Celebrate Reading!

We had a blast celebrating the end of Dr. Seuss's birthday month as well as our favorite books when SMS held its annual Read Across America Spirit Week

On Monday, we had Crazy Socks Day. We wore mismatched socks, super socks, our parents' socks, and even some matching giraffe socks! We celebrated through literature by revisiting a few of our favorite tongue twisters in Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks and we also designed a few of our own Seuss Socks that we displayed on our classroom door

On Tuesday, it was Cat in the Hat Day, and we all got to wear our favorite (or craziest!) hats to school.

Since many of us had already read the original Cat in the Hat, we read The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, also by Dr. Seuss. Boy, do we wish we had Little Cat Z and his Voom this winter with all the snow we had!

Wednesday transformed into Wacky Wednesday, and we came to school with wacky hair, clothes, and even wacky shoes! We read Dr. Seuss's book Wacky Wednesday, and we loved finding all of the things in the book that were a bit out of the ordinary :)

Everything from our morning message to our daily letter and our morning work was a little mixed up and crazy! Can you figure out the real titles of these Dr. Seuss books?

We also mixed things up a bit on Wednesday with our book swap! Everyone brought in at least one book to trade. We laid the book out in a circle, and after we all got a chance to scan all of the books, we picked up a new book that caught our eye!

On Thursday, we came to school dressed as our favorite book characters. We greeted each other as our characters and talked about which book character we would want to be in real life and why. Many of us chose magical characters or characters with super powers so we could see what it would be like to have a bit of magic ourselves.

Pinkalicious, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Nate the Great, and Curious George paid us a visit...

..as well as Amber Brown, Percy Jackson, and Anna of Arendelle!

Captain Underpants came soaring into our classroom...

and FIVE Fancy Nancy's made our classroom a bit more glamorous!

Teachers also had fun dressing up as a few of our favorite literary insects! Mrs. Fitzgerald was Fly Guy and Ms. Riley was the Very Hungry Caterpillar

Friday was our Curl Up and Read Day, and we got to bring in pillows, blankies, and stuffed animals from home to curl up and read with during Reader's Workshop. We also had a community reader and mystery reader come in to share some new stories with us!

We loved celebrating our love of books and Dr. Seuss this week. We hope the celebration continues throughout the year as we continue to foster great reading skills and experience stories new and old!
